As at 2021, circa 4 million cataract procedures are performed every year in the U.S. and nearly 28 million worldwide, this is more than 60,000 cataract procedures performed every day globally.
The future for cataract surgery is numerically on a steep upward path. With aging populations and increased life expectancy, there is a projected compound annual growth rate (CAR) of 3% to 4% per year for cataract surgery in the next 30+ years. This could lead to 8 million cataract surgeries a year in the U.S. and more than 60 million in the world within 24 years. If the 8 to 11 cataract procedures a year per 1,000 population performed in the advanced countries is the correct number, and resources allow it, volume could approach 100 million procedures a year by 2050.
